A few weeks ago I attended the Table sharing Workshop put on by Betty Liu and Meg Dubina. It was a food photography and food styling workshop with the theme of seafood and was held on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard. I had never been to Martha’s Vineyard before and I had been wanting to meet Betty and Meg for a while, not to mention their previous workshop looked amazing, and decided to attend.
We had beautiful weather and AMAZING food!
Our food was made by the talented chef Patrick Soucy and his wife, as well as Betty, Meg, and their assistant Alana (of Fix Feast Flair), and it was seriously unreal! We were so spoiled. The food was so fresh and the flavors were magnificent! Also gorgeous and perfect for our photos!
A note on the ice cream above: we tried the lobster ice cream….it was…interesting…haha!
We had lessons on lighting, propping, styling, and more! Below Betty modeled for some cake frosting drizzling and gave us some tips on styling and placement.
One afternoon we took our props to the beach and made use of some harsher lighting.
It was so fun to see what food would come out of the kitchen each night. There was nothing I didn’t like and it all looked beautiful for photos!
One of the most fun parts of the workshop was taking a trip out with Jeremy of Spearpoint Oysters. We learned about the whole process of farming and harvesting oysters and really were able to capture the ocean-to-table experience! And yes, we got to eat the oysters they had brought up that day! They were amazing, to say the least.
Jeremy was a great sport, having all those cameras in his face while he explained everything to us. It was an amazing process! Dinner that night was fish, lobster, and oysters. We had another lesson on styling, and then feasted!
Another great part of this workshop was the fact that we got to test our newly learned skills by teaming up and making our own breakfast vignettes! At the end of the day we all were able to see what everyone came up with. It was so neat to see the different interpretations and perspectives from each person, especially when a lot of us seemed to take the same picture through out the workshop, the outcome was completely different and unique to everyone’s individual style.
We ate well, we drank well, and most of all we had so much fun! While the food was amazing, the company was what really made it that much more special. When I attended a similar workshop last year, I had such a good time because of the people that were there, and it was the same this time around too. We all laughed a ton, had great discussions surrounding photography and food, and everyone was just all around nice and helpful. I hope to have such a good experience at all workshops in the future. This trip truly inspired me to keep doing what I love with my food photography work, it really is so enjoyable. I hope to continue to do more workshops in the future!
